Mekanism recently added industry veteran Velvy Appleton to the position of Head of Production. Velvy adds significant live action, VFX and motion graphics production experience across a wide variety of media forms, styles, and techniques to Mekanism's growing staff. With over twenty years in the business, Velvy's credits include extensive VFX work across both film and commercials, including all types of 2D & 3D animation/visual effects, stop-motion, live action and documentary, making him an ideal fit for Mekanism's diverse integrated media campaigns. Commenting on the recent hire, Mekanism EP/President Jason Harris, says, "Velvy is a great fit for the creative collective style we incorporate. He has successfully worked across about every type of production setting in the industry and brings this diverse background and ability to manage huge productions to the table."
Prior to joining Mekanism, Appleton worked as a Senior Producer at Radium, developing various company-wide tools and protocols, in addition to his VFX-producing efforts for a broad range of projects and styles. At Radium, his credits include overseeing more than 80 VFX shots for the feature film Sin City, as well as commercials for notable brands such as Disney, Volkswagen, Oracle, and Adidas. In addition, while a Senior Producer at The Orphanage, Velvy worked extensively on the VFX-rich feature films, Hellboy and SpyKids3D. The Hellboy production included 225 VFX shots and the management of a crew of 120 digital artists, editors, and production support. Most recently, Velvy produced Speed & Angels, a feature-length HD documentary profiling current-day F-14 fighter pilots (slated for release in 2008).
After graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania, Velvy developed his talents at R/Greenberg Associates and Colossal Pictures, before working as a highly-successful Freelance Producer for over a decade. While freelancing, Appleton worked with firms such as Industrial Light and Magic, Wild Brain, Complete Pandemonium, Colossal Pictures, Disney/ABC, Nickelodeon, March First/CKS, Curious Pictures, and StarTV Asia.
