JOI-Design has been commissioned to create the 2016 limited edition "Berker Cup," joining a cast of leading creative names like Matteo Thun, Sauerbruch Hutton and Werner Aisslinger who have previously been awarded the honour.
Every two years, a new design based on the simple shape originated by Konstantin Grcic in 2000 is crafted by Rosenthal, the time-honoured producer of luxurious porcelain ware, for Berker, manufacturer of top quality intelligent switches, to bestow upon its international VIP clients.

Following the studio's ideology of making exceptional products that intuitively combine form and function, JOI-Design has fashioned a distinctive addition to the Berker cup collection. The cup's pure white form reveals contrasting textures; while the interior is finished in a smooth glossy glaze, the exterior's matt surface with a diamond-pattern relief provides an intriguing haptic experience for the user.
"We have created a cup that engages the senses through playful contrasts: the smooth inner and raised outer surfaces, the matt and glossy finishes - and between expectation and surprise," commented Corinna Kretschmar-Joehnk and Peter Joehnk, co-managing directors of JOI-Design, on the principles shaping their concept. "The delicate matt relief of the cup's exterior, conceived as a finely spun net, is a charming juxtaposition to its unexpectedly glossy interior."
