Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Public Coin Design Competition

The United States Mint has announced a competition to design the obverse side of the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program. The four curved coins, will be minted in 2019 in recognition of the first manned lunar landing almost 50 years ago.

This competition provides a unique occasion for the United States Mint and for artists to celebrate this exciting moment and create what will be a stunning coin program. The winner will not only have his or her initials on the final coin, but will also receive a $5,000 prize.

Surcharges from sales of the coin will be paid to three organizations that support the history and the people behind America's space program: the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum's "Destination Moon" exhibit, the Astronauts Memorial Foundation, and the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation.

The competition will open for applications on May 1, and close on June 29, 2017.
