The 5th International Iconic Houses Conference will be held May 15th to 18th at Dolce Norwalk in Norwalk, CT. The event will feature more tours, more speakers, and more networking activities than in past conferences, all focusing on Modern residential architecture's importance, its preservation, and its future.
The theme of this year's conference is 'Modernism on the East Coast - Philip Johnson and the Harvard Five.' The conference is retracing the root taken by Modernism on the East Coast of the USA when it arrived from Europe. In particular, the New Canaan area has an impressive number of high-quality Modernist homes because the architects who taught at Harvard built houses for themselves and their friends here. Many are the work of Philip Johnson and the architects of the Harvard Five. These unique homes will be the focus of the lectures and conference house tours.
The second conference day is devoted to 'Iconic Houses in Latin America' and aims to promote engagement, cooperation and strengthen ties between North America, Europe and Latin America and bring on the radar the house museums that are doing well and those houses that are threatened with demolition or closure. Representatives of house museums of several Latin American countries will give examples of their struggle to survive or share with us their successful survival strategies.
