Wärtsilä has launched 'Oceanic Awakening,' an initiative that, by 2020, aims to connect and inspire 20 of the world's most influential port cities to embrace and develop Smart Marine ecosystems, which rely on digitalization, cost-effective, carbon-free shipping via smart vessels and more.
Also as part of the initiative, an assembly of key global influencers from design and architecture came together in Hamburg to determine how major port cities would be affected. The results are future-facing visions of some of the world's most iconic cities, including concepts for offshore ports allowing for pop-up test sites within the city itself - like retail hubs and fresh produce markets.
US-based influencers on the project included architecture, design and sustainability innovators like Dong-Ping Wong, designer/founder of FOOD and Friends of + POOL who's worked on projects for Kanye West and Nike, and ORE Design + Technology Founder/Principal Architect Thomas Kosbau, rePLACE Urban Studio's Peter Syrett and The Dream Corps CEO, Vien Truong.
