Vitra has unveiled Vlinder Sofa, which combines the archetypal form of a comfortable sofa with a precisely tailored duvet-like cover. Designed by Hella Jongerius, the concept of Vlinder Sofa is driven by innovation in material and thereby creates a new aesthetic. Its tactile quality manifests itself through the textile surface and the super-soft comfortable seating.
The contemporary sofa body serves as a platform for the extraordinary cover. Featuring a rich tapestry of motifs, weaves and color, its shape vaguely resembles a colorful butterfly with outspread wings. Available in light reds, dark reds, light greens or dark greens, Vlinder Sofa is perfectly complemented by Bovist, a stool, ottoman and floor pillow whose motif and color scheme are inspired by the sofa's design.
The textile cover pushes the boundaries of modern weaving technology - eight colors with yarns of two different thicknesses comprise the various levels of seven different jacquard weaves. The individual sections of the cover are woven in one piece and cut by hand. The resulting sofa design shows a multitude of weave patterns, colors and textures that flow together on the surface to form a choreographed, richly abstract composition full of density and depth.
