Design and live-action studio, Colourmovie, recently finished the main title and graphics package for the third season of MTV's hit show, Wild 'N Out. This season's graphics serve as a branding refresh for the show, developing upon themes from the first two seasons that were also designed by Colourmovie.
After the successes of seasons one and two, host and co-creator Nick Cannon returned to Colourmovie for season three to help build upon the show's already established identity. In line with the show's hip hop aesthetic, Colourmovie referenced both street marketing campaigns and hip hop album art to help design an open that is both sophisticated and playful. Colourmovie's Creative Director Brandon Martinez wanted to maintain the strong branding from previous seasons while growing aesthetically. "Our task is to grow with the show," says Martinez "every season needs to recapture the audience."
For the project, Colourmovie's team included architect turned 3D artist, Magnus Hierta. Using Maxon Cinema 4D to build a 3D cityscape, the main title establishes Los Angeles as the viewer is taken over the Hollywood Hills and through the buildings of Hollywood. A red paint stroke guides the viewer through the city and shot live-action silhouettes congregate on street corners or walk through frame.
The journey through the city concludes as the paint stroke becomes a red carpet and introduces the Cannon Theater. "We wanted to make the paint stroke more than just a design element, but also a character that draws you into the piece" says, Drew Neujahr, Art Director at Colourmovie.
To give the project its finishing touches, Colourmovie shot paint elements along with a heavy cast of silhouetted characters. Using the JVC GY-HD100U camera, Colourmovie was able to capture high quality HD images. The images were then composited using Adobe After Effects.
Using these design elements, the piece continues with graffiti and poster artists spraying and applying posters of each Wild 'N Out cast member and guest star. The end result is a captivating main title that defines the show's identity.
"It was great to work with the Wild 'N Out crew again," remarks John McGinnis, Executive Producer at Colourmovie. "They let us do what we do best and from that trust they end up with a strongly branded show. Everyone ends up happy."
Colourmovie used a combination of live-action footage, photographic stills, 2d and 3d elements to achieve the look of the main title.
