For the technologically-driven SK-II Future X Smart Stores, Rare Volume designed and produced a series of interactive portrait installations for six locations throughout Asia and the United States. The experience pairs high-resolution cameras with custom analysis and graphics software, generating real-time responses to visitors' emotions for the global beauty brand's innovative retail, pop-up, and event network.
Inspired by the natural ingredients found in SK-II products, a vibrant particle system reflects customers' emotions by interpreting their facial expressions in realtime. Created to draw passersby into each location, the visual and motion direction blends the brand's design language with illustrative aesthetics.
Integrating motion tracking and expression analysis algorithms, Rare Volume developed a multimillion-particle dynamic fluid simulation that mimics facial movements and gestures. As a customer's facial expression changes, the visual and sonic palettes respond in realtime.
For each of the six locations, the installation was customized to complement the distinct interior and exterior design as well as varying physical footprints. An outdoor installation during Singapore's monsoon season necessitated special technical consideration for waterproofing, and the development of custom camera exposure algorithms.
